Girivalam Walk
Girivalam β Walking Around Lord Shiva
Among the most spiritually powerful practices at Tiruvannamalai is the Girivalam β the ritual circumambulation of Arunachala Hill on foot. The walking circuit covers 14 kilometres around the base of the hill and is performed by devotees in a bare-footed, clockwise direction as an act of surrender and worship to Lord Shiva.
The Girivalam is considered equivalent to having darshan of Shiva in all his cosmic forms β each step around the hill is a prayer, and the walk itself becomes a moving meditation. On full moon nights (Pournami), the Girivalam swells to an extraordinary spectacle: hundreds of thousands of devotees from across South India fill the 14 km circuit, walking through the night with oil lamps, singing Shiva hymns, and stopping at the eight sacred lingams (Ashta Lingams) positioned at the cardinal points around the hill.

The History of Arunachaleswarar Temple
From ancient Sangam poetry to towering Vijayanagara gopurams β Arunachaleswarar’s story is one of the longest and most extraordinary in all of Indian temple heritage.
The Hill That Predates the Temple
The sacredness of Arunachala Hill predates any formal temple structure by centuries. Classical Tamil Sangam literature (1stβ3rd century CE) references the hill as a place of profound spiritual power. The Tevaram, the body of Shaiva hymns by the Nayanmars (Tamil Shaiva saints), contains multiple compositions specifically in praise of Arunachaleswarar β some dating to the 7th century CE β placing this as one of the oldest continuously worshipped Shiva sites in the Tamil tradition.
The legend of Shiva’s manifestation as an infinite column of fire β the Lingothbhava β is the central myth of Arunachala. When Brahma and Vishnu disputed which among them was supreme, Shiva appeared as a blazing column of light that stretched infinitely in both directions. Neither could find its beginning or end. The column eventually became the hill of Arunachala, and its representation as the Agni Lingam in the temple’s sanctum remains unchanged to this day.
The Temple That Grew into a City
The existing stone temple complex at Arunachaleswarar was built and expanded over nearly a thousand years of royal patronage. The Chola dynasty (9thβ13th century) constructed the earliest stone shrines and the inner sanctum in the Dravidian style. The Hoysala kings of Karnataka added their characteristically intricate lathe-turned stone pillars and friezes, several of which survive in the outer prakarams.
The Vijayanagara Empire (14thβ17th century) was responsible for the most dramatic expansion of the temple complex, including the construction of its four towering rajagopurams β the tallest of which, the eastern tower, stands at an extraordinary 66 metres, making it one of the tallest temple towers in India. The Vijayanagara rulers also endowed the Girivalam path with its eight Ashta Lingam shrines, establishing the circuit of circumambulation that millions of devotees follow to this day.
Ramana Maharshi and Global Pilgrimage
In the late 19th and early 20th century, Tiruvannamalai attracted one of India’s most beloved and internationally recognised sages β Sri Ramana Maharshi. At the age of 16, Ramana arrived at Arunachala and never left, describing the hill itself as his guru. He spent over 50 years at the foot of Arunachala, teaching the path of self-inquiry (Atma Vichara) in silence and in conversation. His presence transformed Tiruvannamalai into an internationally known centre of Advaita Vedanta.
Today, Tiruvannamalai draws pilgrims from across India and spiritual seekers from Europe, America, and Australia β making it one of the rare places in India that is equally sacred to devout Shaiva temple worshippers and Advaita Vedanta practitioners. The Sri Ramanasramam at the foot of Arunachala continues his legacy. For temple information and Girivalam schedules, visit the official Devasthanam website.
Before You Visit Arunachalam
Tiruvannamalai requires a full day to experience properly. Here is everything you need to know for a meaningful and well-prepared pilgrimage.
Full Moon vs Regular Day Visits
Full moon Girivalam nights are breathtaking but draw hundreds of thousands of devotees β traffic and crowds are intense. For a more intimate darshan experience, visit on a weekday morning. If you do plan to attend full moon Girivalam, call us 3β5 days in advance to pre-book your cab. Check the official website for full moon dates.
Girivalam β Wear Comfortable Footwear
The 14 km Girivalam walk is traditionally done barefoot on the dirt path closest to the hill. However, the outer path has tarmac sections where footwear is practical. Wear cushioned sandals or lightweight walking shoes up to the walking area, carry a cloth bag for footwear when you switch. The circuit typically takes 3β4 hours at a relaxed pace.
Don’t Miss Karthigai Deepam
The annual Karthigai Deepam festival (typically in NovemberβDecember) is when a massive fire beacon is lit atop Arunachala Hill β visible for over 30 kilometres across the plains. This is one of the most spectacular religious events in all of Tamil Nadu and draws over a million pilgrims. Book your cab well in advance if you plan to attend this festival.
Visit Ramanasramam
Sri Ramana Maharshi’s ashram at the foot of Arunachala Hill is open to all visitors free of charge. The meditation hall, the samadhi shrine, and the expansive gardens create an atmosphere of profound inner quiet. Plan at least 30β45 minutes here β it is one of the most peaceful places in South India. Our driver knows exactly where to park nearby.
Carry Sufficient Water and Sun Protection
Tiruvannamalai can be intensely hot, especially between March and June. For Girivalam or the hill climb, carry at least 2 litres of water per person, a hat or cloth for sun protection, and energy snacks. Several small stalls along the Girivalam path sell coconut water and fruits β but having your own supply is wise, especially during peak festival seasons.
Temple Dress Code and Entry
The inner sanctum of Arunachaleswarar requires traditional dress β dhoti or veshti for men, saree or salwar kameez for women. Entry to the innermost shrine is restricted to Hindus. The outer temple complex and the temple tank area are open to all visitors regardless of faith. Photography is permitted in the outer areas but not inside the main shrines.
